Times tables, sharing equally, and the link between the two.
Multiplication combines equal groups (4 groups of 3 is 4 × 3 = 12) and division splits an amount into equal groups (12 ÷ 3 = 4). They undo each other, so knowing 4 × 3 = 12 also gives 12 ÷ 3 and 12 ÷ 4.
Secure addition helps with multiplication as repeated addition, and known times-table facts help with division.
One error to watch for: expecting multiplication always to give a bigger number. For example, being surprised that 8 × ½ = 4 is smaller than 8.
Multiplication is repeated addition made efficient, and division is its inverse — sharing into equal groups, or finding how many groups fit. They are taught together because they are the same relationship read in two directions: knowing 7 × 8 = 56 is also knowing 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
This is the topic where recall pays off most visibly. Times tables are the last piece of arithmetic that genuinely benefits from being memorised, and a child without them will find fractions, ratio, area and algebra all harder than they need to be — not because those topics are beyond them, but because the working memory is spent on the multiplication inside.

Tables are worth genuine daily practice, but spread thinly — a few minutes each day for weeks, not an hour at the weekend. Most children find 6, 7, 8 and 12 hardest; targeting those specifically is more efficient than reciting all of them in order.
When division goes wrong, check whether your child is picturing sharing or grouping. "20 shared between 4" and "how many 4s in 20" give the same answer but feel different, and a child who only has one picture will struggle with the problems that fit the other.
